The Winchendon Project

In 2007 the Joint Coalition on Health initiated The Winchendon Project: A school-based initiative designed to enhance mental health and deter substance abuse among  youth in Winchendon.  To date, The Health Foundation of Central Mass has provided more than $1.4 million dollars in funding to plan and implement the Project at Murdock Middle High School.  The mission of the Project is to “modify the risk and protective factors of middle and high school aged youth to enhance mental health and deter substance use” among the approximately 800 students, grades 6 – 12, who attend the school.  This multi-phased, comprehensive school and community initiative utilizes evidence based practices in mental health and youth substance abuse prevention to increase access to school-based behavioral health services, promote healthy decision making among youth and limit social and retail access to alcohol for minors. Through school-community partnerships, TWP has nearly quadrupled the number of students receiving individual counseling services on-site at Murdock Middle High School, connected students and families to needed resources and initiated a community wide conversation around substance abuse among and access to alcohol for underage youth.  For more information please visit http://www.edline.net/pages/Murdock_Middle_High_School
